The route · What to expect

From mangrove tunnel to open sea — here's where the boat takes you.

The Neyyar River runs west for 56 kilometres from the Agasthyamalai hills, and at Poovar it runs out of land. It meets a lagoon first, then a saltwater estuary, then a thin strip of golden sand — and on the other side of that sand is the Arabian Sea. The boat takes you through all three.

You start on the river. The route passes through the AVM Canal — a narrow channel where the mangroves close over the boat from both sides. Kingfishers are common here; so are cormorants drying their wings on the low branches.

On the 1.5 and 2-hour routes the boat reaches the estuary sandbar. The captain cuts the engine. On one side is calm backwater; twenty metres away is the open Arabian Sea. On the 2-hour route you step off at the golden beach — fine pale sand, no road reaches it.

When the boats run

Timings, slots, and the months that matter.

Sunrise slot

6:15 AM · advance booking

First light at the estuary, cool air, almost no other boats. Best for bird photography.

Regular hours

10:00 AM – 4:00 PM

Boats run continuously. You pick your preferred time at booking.

Sunset slot

4:00 PM departure

The lagoon turns golden by 5 PM. A 2-hour trip ends at the estuary as light drops.

Monsoon closure

June & July

Suspended for safety during peak Neyyar swells. We reopen August onwards.

Best months to visit: October through March. The water is clearer, the mangroves are greener after the rains, and the sandbar at the estuary is at its widest.

Before you book

Common questions, answered plainly.

Is the price per person or per boat?+
Per boat. The base price covers 2 guests. Each additional guest is ₹99, up to a maximum of 6. A family of four on the 1-hour cruise pays ₹1,199 + ₹99 + ₹99 = ₹1,397. The booking page calculates this automatically.
What are the boating timings at Poovar?+
Boats run daily from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM, with the last departure at 4:00 PM. A sunrise slot is available at 6:15 AM (advance booking only). Closed in June and July for monsoon. We reopen from August.
What is the Poovar estuary and why do people want to see it?+
The point where the Neyyar River meets the Arabian Sea. A narrow strip of golden sand — sometimes only a few metres wide — separates freshwater backwater from open ocean. You can stand on the sand and touch both. Visible on the 1.5-hour and 2-hour routes.
Is it safe for elderly guests and children?+
Yes. Life jackets are fitted to all passengers before departure, including children. The route is sheltered and the water is calm throughout. The captain only stops on the sandbar side of the estuary, never on the sea side. Tell us about any mobility needs at booking.
Can I cancel if my plans change?+
Free cancellation up to 48 hours before your slot. Less than 48 hours is non-refundable. Rescheduling is possible subject to availability — message us directly.
What should I bring on the boat?+
Light, comfortable clothing — the boat is covered. Sunscreen and sunglasses if you plan to step off at the beach. A small bag for your phone and camera. No large luggage; there are no lockers. Easy-to-remove footwear.
How is Cruoo different from booking at the jetty on arrival?+
Price: we charge ₹1,301 to ₹3,251 less than typical walk-in rates. Certainty: your boat is reserved before you arrive — walk-ins can wait 30–45 minutes. No negotiation: the price you see is the price you pay.

A note on safety

The Neyyar estuary is beautiful and it is also powerful. The current where the river meets the sea moves fast even when the surface looks calm. Our captains do not take boats into the estuary mouth — they anchor at the sandbar on the backwater side. The golden sand beach is safe to walk but not to swim from. During monsoon (June–July) and after unusually heavy rains, we suspend operations. We'd rather refund a booking than risk a trip in dangerous conditions.

Poovar is 35 kilometres from Trivandrum. Most people who visit Kerala never find it.

You found it. Book before the slot fills.
